A couple of years ago, Robert Kentta sent me an email of a photo of an unidentified Native man taken approximately 150 years ago at the military Fort Umpqua. It is in an archive back east (most of the surviving Fort Umpqua photos are in archives in Oregon). I have lost the email, but somehow the photograph survived in my hard drive. I accidentally stumbled on it this afternoon while wrangling the mess that are my photos in the Picture file.
So, I thought I would share this image everyone. He is holding a bow and arrows. His eyes make me sad – it is like he is looking in the distance, remembering. Given what was happening in the late 1850s, I am sure this man had suffered many losses:
